Sometimes people hide their feelings because they do not want to worry others. Being able to notice when someone may be struggling emotionally can help you offer gentle support.
Possible Signs to Look For
Not everyone shows the same signs, but some common changes include
• withdrawing from friends or family
• losing interest in hobbies and daily routine
• changes in sleeping or eating patterns
• appearing unusually tired or low in energy
• becoming easily upset or irritable
• talking less or avoiding conversation
• expressing feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness
• struggling to focus or make decisions
One sign alone does not always mean something is wrong. A pattern of changes over time may be a sign that a person needs support.
How to Approach Them
Start with simple kindness. You might say I have noticed you seem a little quieter than usual. Is everything alright or I care about you and I am here if you want to talk
Keep your tone warm and calm. The aim is to create a safe space, not to pressure them.
Why Listening Matters
Often the most helpful thing you can do is listen without judgement. Allow the person to speak freely. You do not need to offer solutions. Your presence alone can be comforting.
When to Encourage Extra Support
If the person seems overwhelmed or unable to cope, gently suggest talking to a doctor, counsellor or trusted support service. Let them know that reaching out is a positive and brave step.
A Final Thought
You do not need special training to care for someone. Small acts of compassion can make a meaningful difference to someone who is struggling emotionally.
